Comments:
The first pilot of Star Trek, "The Cage" was rejected by NBC as being too cerebral. The second pilot introduced William Shatner as Captain and Leonard Nimoy as Spock. Admiral Roddenberry's first tour of duty only lasted three years,
(1966-1969) after that the series survived in syndication only. The series became so popular Paramount decided to start releasing Star Trek movies. Admiral Roddenberry had one special assignment (Star Trek: The Motion Picture) and one seven year
tour of duty (Star Trek: The Next Generation) that was cut to only five years, due to his death of cardiac arrest on stardate 199124.10. He is survived by his wife Majel Barrett ("Nurse Chapel" from Star Trek and "Lwaxana Troi" in Star Trek: The Next Generation),
and his at the time seventeen year old son, Eugene Roddenberry Jr (who is following in his father's footsteps by producing Star Trek: New Voyages).
Admiral Roddenberry saw the Next Generation as a chance to correct some of the original series' flaws. Thus the captain was no longer automatically beamed down to dangerous planets, and women were given higher profile roles. And the saucer section of the ship was now detachable. By and large his improvements showed maturity, most notably in the casting of a Shakespearian actor as an unexpectedly intellectual captain and the brilliant political move of introducing a Klingon to the ship's bridge.
